Shopify Discounts That Boost Sales Without Killing Your Margins

Discounts can grow sales or quietly wreck your profit. Here's how to use Shopify discounts and promotions strategically, which types to use, and the traps to avoid.

Discounts are the easiest lever in e-commerce and the easiest one to pull too hard. Used well, they grow sales and average order value. Used carelessly, they train customers to wait for a sale and quietly eat your profit. Here is how to run Shopify discounts strategically.

What Shopify gives you

Shopify supports several discount mechanisms:

  • Automatic discounts (applied at checkout without a code).
  • Discount codes (customer enters a code).
  • Types: amount off, percentage off, buy X get Y, and free shipping.
  • For complex logic beyond the built-in rules (tiered, bundle, customer-specific), Shopify Functions can do more. (See Shopify Functions explained.)

The tools are not the hard part. The strategy is.

The trap: discounting by default

The biggest mistake is making discounts your permanent state. When there is always a code floating around, three things happen:

  1. Customers wait for the next sale instead of buying now.
  2. Your product's perceived value drops.
  3. Your margin shrinks on sales you would have made anyway.

A discount should change behaviour you want (first purchase, bigger basket, faster decision), not subsidise purchases that were already going to happen.

Discounts that tend to help

  • Welcome offer for first-time buyers (in exchange for an email signup, so you can remarket).
  • Free shipping threshold ("free shipping over $50"). This is the quiet winner: it lifts average order value because people add items to qualify.
  • Bundles / buy more save more that raise basket size and move more units.
  • Genuine seasonal or clearance events, time-boxed so they stay special.
  • Win-back offers to lapsed customers, targeted, not blanket.

Notice the pattern: most of these either capture a customer you can keep, or raise order value, rather than just shaving price.

Guardrails so discounts don't eat profit

  • Know your margins. A 20% discount on a 30% margin product is a big chunk of your profit. Do the maths before you run it.
  • Set minimum order values so a discount comes with a bigger basket.
  • Use expiry and usage limits on codes so offers stay contained and create urgency.
  • Prefer AOV-raising offers (thresholds, bundles) over blanket percentage-off.
  • Measure profit, not revenue. A promotion that lifts revenue but lowers total profit is a loss dressed as a win.

A simple rule of thumb

Before running any discount, ask: "What behaviour is this buying, and is it worth the margin I am giving up?" If the answer is "a sale I would have got anyway," skip it. If it is "a new customer, a bigger order, or a reactivated buyer," it is probably worth it.

The takeaway

Shopify makes discounts easy, which is exactly why they are easy to overuse. Discount with intent: welcome offers to capture customers, thresholds and bundles to raise order value, and time-boxed events that stay special. Protect your margins with minimums, limits and expiry, and always measure profit, not just sales.

Frequently asked questions

What types of discounts can I run on Shopify?

Shopify supports automatic discounts and discount codes for amount-off, percentage-off, buy-x-get-y and free shipping. For complex rules (tiered, bundle, customer-specific), Shopify Functions can go further than the built-in options.

Do discounts hurt my brand?

Constant, deep discounting can, because it trains customers to wait for a sale and erodes perceived value. Occasional, purposeful offers do not. The goal is to discount with intent, not by default.

What is a free shipping threshold and does it work?

It is offering free shipping above a set order value (for example, spend $50). It reliably lifts average order value because customers add items to reach it, often the most effective 'discount' you can run.

How do I stop discounts from eating my profit?

Know your margins, set minimum order values, use codes with expiry and usage limits, and prefer AOV-raising offers (thresholds, bundles) over blanket percentage-off. Track whether promotions actually increase profit, not just revenue.
