Shopify SEO: A Practical Checklist for 2026
A clear, no-fluff Shopify SEO checklist for 2026 covering structure, product pages, content, technical setup and structured data, so your store actually gets found.
Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics for you, but out of the box most stores leave easy wins on the table. Here is the practical checklist I work through to get a Shopify store ranking, no tricks, just the fundamentals done properly.
1. Get the structure right
- Keep a logical hierarchy: home, collections, products, blog.
- Use clear, keyword-relevant collection names (these pages often rank better than individual products).
- Set a clean navigation so both users and crawlers reach every important page in a couple of clicks.
2. Optimise product pages
Product pages are where the money is, so treat each as a landing page:
- Unique titles and descriptions. Never ship the manufacturer's copy that a hundred other stores also use. Write real, specific descriptions.
- One clear focus keyword per page, in the title, first paragraph and image alt text naturally.
- Descriptive alt text on every product image.
- Reviews on the page (they add fresh, keyword-rich content and trust).
3. Fix titles and meta descriptions
- Write a compelling title tag (under about 60 characters) and meta description (under about 155) for key pages.
- Make them read like something a buyer would click, not keyword soup.
4. Handle duplicate content
Shopify can create duplicate URLs (for example products accessible through collection paths). Shopify sets canonical tags automatically for most of this, but check that your canonicals point where you expect, especially with apps that add pages.
5. Add structured data
Product schema helps Shopify listings show rich results (price, availability, ratings) in Google and makes your pages easier for AI tools to quote. Many themes include some schema; confirm it is present and valid, and add FAQPage and Article schema where relevant.
6. Publish real content
- Start a blog answering the questions your buyers actually ask.
- Target buyer-intent topics ("best X for Y", "how to choose", comparisons).
- Internally link posts to the collections and products they relate to.
Content is how you rank for more than just your brand name.
7. Speed and Core Web Vitals
- Compress images and use the theme's lazy loading.
- Remove apps you no longer use (each can add scripts).
- Keep third-party tags lean.
Fast stores rank better and convert better. Aim for green Core Web Vitals on mobile.
8. Technical basics
- Shopify generates a sitemap.xml automatically. Submit it in Google Search Console.
- Verify your store in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Check for broken links and set up redirects for any changed URLs.
- Make sure your store is not left on password protection or set to noindex after launch.
9. Off-store signals
- Set up and complete a Google Business Profile if you have a location.
- Earn links and mentions from real, relevant sites.
- Keep your brand details consistent everywhere.
The takeaway
Shopify SEO is not magic. It is unique product content, clean structure, valid structured data, real blog content, fast pages and the technical basics done right. Work through this list and your store moves from invisible to findable.
